Lava Rock

Lava rock is an igneous rock which is formed from the cooling and hardening of magma. Its porous texture comes from trapped volcanic gasses that escape as the magma cools and solidifies into rock.

Lava rock can be found in several colors including black, dark gray, or even red and is often lighter than other stones due to these gas-formed cavities.  Lava rock can be found all over the world.

It has a relatively low Mohs Hardness of 5 - 5.5.

Lava rock is often sold “waxed” however, “unwaxed” Lava Rock can be used as an oil infuser.  It is best to avoid harsh citrus or lemon oils, as they can damage the stones. Use only one or two drops of essential oil at a time and allow it to dry completely before wearing or handling.
