Canadian Jade
Canadian Jade is a type of nephrite jade and comes in many different shades. The majority of Canadian Jade is sourced from the province of British Columbia, particularly along the west coast and Vancouver Island.
As many Canadian mines are slowly being mined out, the price of jade keeps increasing as it is likely to become scarcer.
Canadian Jade typically has a Mohs Hardness of 6 - 6.5.
Fake Canadian Jade can be identified through a few tests that check its density, temperature, and color, and by looking for signs of imitation like air bubbles (which means it is made of glass) or unnatural layering. Genuine Canadian nephrite jade is tough and feels dense, is cold to the touch, and does not have perfect uniformity in color.
Also, though it is not recommended, it is possible to perform a “scratch test” by attempting to lightly scratch the surface of the material with a steel knife or key. The genuine material should be hard enough to be unaffected by this test.
