Buri Root

Buri root refers to the beads and various other products made from the buri palm tree (called Corypha utan). These beads, commonly called “Bodhi Root”, are known for their use in prayer beads and malas.

The buri palm is highly valued in the Philippines, where almost every part of the plant is utilized in some way.  The nuts are used to make beads for jewelry and prayer, while the leaves are used to weave into baskets, fans, mats, and hats.

The sap of the palm can be extracted and cooked into a sweet delicacy called "Pakaskas" while the starch from the plant can be used to make a flour called natok. The wood is also used in furniture, and handicrafts.
