Agate

Red Agate

An Agate stone is a type of chalcedony (a microcrystalline quartz) and is known for its beautiful and vibrant bands, concentric patterns, and diverse colors.

Agate comes in a wide array of colors and patterns, including white, pink, peach, beige, blue, red, and black.  Some of the most popular types of Agates are Moss, Blue Lace, Botswana, and Fire.

Agate stones have a Mohs Hardness of around 6.5 - 7.

Note: It is best to avoid storing this material in direct sunlight as prolonged exposure can lead to fading color over time.

To tell if an agate is real, look for distinct, irregular banding, check its translucency by holding it to the light.

Although it is not recommended, it is possible to perform a “scratch test” by attempting to lightly scratch the surface of a piece of glass with the sharp edge of this material.
