African Bloodstone

Also known as the "stone of Babylon" African Bloodstone is a specific variety of Bloodstone found in South Africa.

Legend has it that the red specks in the stone were formed from Christ's blood falling onto green jasper during the crucifixion.  But probably more likely, African Bloodstone is simply a mix of Chalcedony and Jasper.

Note: “African” and “Indian” Bloodstones are the same type of gem, the difference being in their appearance and where they are mined from.  But other than that they are the same gem.

African Bloodstone has a Mohs Hardness of 6.5 to 7.

There is fake Bloodstone out there so to check, keep an eye out for beads that are TOO uniform in color and consistency and have a lack of natural inclusions.

Note: It is best to avoid storing this material in direct sunlight as prolonged exposure can lead to fading color over time.
